The great challenge of children with dyslexia to writing


How does it feel a child with dyslexia who should take a writing test? And that father or mother who has unworked dyslexia, who at some point must write some indication or somewhat complex justification and has this challenge that can mean facing a weakness? What will be those tools that will help you and put you at the forefront in overcoming our own limits? It's a challenge!

Faced with all these questions, I can't help but think of a moment that still echoes in my memory.I never imagined even being capable of such an achievement: 500 kilometers walked between Argentina and Chile, carrying an obvious overweight and with little adequate physical preparation for this activity. But as it was a project and with an ideology established by a community of two hundred young people to which I adhere to this day, these inconveniences were not pretexts for not achieving it. And I was able to do it despite the thousand pains, cramps, blisters and - naturally - a clear intention to resign on one of those hard days.

What were the causes that allowed this achievement? One was the accompaniment of both my partner –who gave me support and encouraged me daily when we got in touch-, friends who were present within the activity and the link that existed between this group of young people with the ideology of that activity. If there had not been that rapport between clear objective, personal will and accompaniment; It would have been impossible for me to reach the destination that had been set for us.

Something like that kids with dyslexia might feel when they have to face an exam or a written assignment. They feel that they have to face their weaknesses to be successful.

First of all, we have to recognize between dyslexia and dysgraphia, since although they are usually similar; each one has its own characteristics and tools to work and strengthen the person. If we do not make that differentiation, the strategies used will not be useful, indeed, they will hinder us in our objective or personal goal. Drawing on the ideas put forward by expert Kate Kelly, we can together begin to detail some simple and straightforward strategies. What is dyslexia and dysgraphia:

- Dysgraphia
It is important to define dysgraphia as a learning difficulty that takes the form of an inconvenience in the physical act of writing. That is, the specific act of taking a pencil and making the movement of writing.

- Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a difficulty in reading which presents the following difficulties in writing: poor quality grammar and spelling, difficulty in spelling the word, problems memorizing familiar words with the naked eye.

In this post we want to focus on dyslexia. What strategies can I suggest to deal with writing? I would like to point out on this occasion four that can be simple but effective.

- Notes, texts and support partners
How can we not remember when in an oral presentation we had that card or paper that supported us? Why not use the same for writing? Phrases made to start, continue or end a text, use of basic connectors or other formula that helps with writing can safeguard that particular moment.

Within the same, if I have spelling doubts, consult through different applications at hand, or the always classic but effective dictionary. Even a friend or partner who you trust and who can read your text, report or document always helps; because another look always contributes because it sees aspects that one cannot appreciate.

- Have a basic structure in your sentences
Do you remember those basic grammar classes? A basic structure within the sentence was to have a subject, verb, and its predicate. Simple and effective. That simplicity is applied to written texts. Prepare simple texts, without complicating the message. That helps when developing an idea.

- Give yourself a longer time
Although it sounds obvious, it is still important to reinforce it. Take your time, do not rush, do not get on that machine of immediacy. Give yourself that time to think that you are going to write and let that simplicity flow through a good pause.

- Identification with the objective, commitment to its purposes and will in the exercise
While they are the last, they are the most important. If there is no desire that comes from your own being, if you do not have it as an ideal that allows you to maintain, despite any frustration, an exercised and iron perseverance that is willing to achieve its goal; All that has been said will not achieve any purpose that transforms you and allows you to grow in your writing.

I thought it was impossible to walk so much given my physique, but the calm in walking, developing a structure in my day to day, leaning on my colleagues and identifying with my goal made that achievement possible. This challenge is not less for a child with dyslexia, but following this same action described in the strategies, allows an advance in his soul and in his development; because he becomes aware that there are no impossibilities, only a strong spirit that can be taken and developed by being strategic and simple in its objectives.

We set our limits and we ourselves are capable of extending them.
